Happy Studio217 Day!

It’s 2/17/2020, so at least its 217 day in the US. in Europe, its 17/2, so they don’t celebrate it.

Progress today has been a little bit slow. Updating to Unity 2019.3.0f6 has been causing some crashes with the game. Last weekend we had a playtest with some friends, and of course we were building at the last minute, right up until everyone arrived. These builds crashed when we tried to play, and crashed when we tried to build, and crashed while in Play mode IN unity. It was a nightmare. We had to go back to 2019.1, where it was safe and working. This week, we’ve been taking it slow, recovering from the heavy work of the weekend and the playtest.

That brings us to today, and the renewed attempts to bring VR Boss Fight (working title) to unity 2019.3.0f6. This comes fraught with errors about old UI syntax being wrong, and the Lightweight Render Pipeline being switched to the Universal Render Pipeline, and all that jazz. EVENTUALLY I got it working by deleting the library folder a few times and forcing Unity to rebuild it for me, and then manually replacing a script from a WORKING 2019.3 project into the main project. Oof. Now we’re not getting any script errors, and we can run the game! The only problem is now all of Unity crashes if the game is in play mode for about 5 minutes.

With PAX looming in the near future, this makes me worried that we might have to stay in 2019.1 to even get a playable build! We were hoping to have something that was at least a little pleasant to look at, and not just a bunch of garbage placeholders. I spent multiple nights fighting with shadergraph trying to get a decent toon shader working, and now that it’s working quite well, I can’t implement it because 2019.3 crashes so often. Alas we may be stuck with 2019.1.

Tomorrow, if we have time, will be spent trying (hopefully not fruitlessly) to force our project into 2019.3, and HOPEFULLY getting it to look a little better with our updated assets and toon shader material.

Wish us luck!

Cole

PS: We don’t have that much footage of gameplay yet, we can upload some of our game sketches and notes, including some charachter design drawings, level layouts, and just general gameplay notes, some of which were taken from playtests. Enjoy!
